Strawberries Dehydrated Freeze Dried Survival Food - #10 Can

Product Description

Our freeze dried strawberries are preserved using a process called freeze drying. Approximately 93% of the moisture is removed by this unique process. The end product weight is reduced by over 90%, while the volume stays the same. Freeze drying preserves the strawberry's nutritional qualities, color, and fresh taste.
Freeze dried and dehydrated products are less expensive than wet pack food because you are not paying for water. The taste is great and the nutritional food value is excellent.

Our strawberries are naturally delicious, with no additives, preservatives or sugar. Great for adding some flavor and color to your breakfast cereal, in recipes that call for fruit, mixed into yogurt, or as a healthy snack right out of the can.

Our fruits and vegetables are stable products with a long shelf life and can be stored effectively for long periods of time. The shelf life of our long term food storage is 15 years under ideal storage conditions. An ideal storage condition is a cool dry place. The cooler the temperature the product is stored at the longer the self life.

Each #10 can contains about 34 1/4 cup servings of freeze dried strawberries. Freeze dried strawberries replaces fresh prepared strawberries at a rate of 10 to 1.
This is for one #10 can.

The #10 refers to the physical size of the can not to the weight of the can's contents. A #10 can is the most common size can for long term food storage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Emergency Survival, August 7, 2011

This review is from: Emergency Survival Food Wise 60 Serving Entree Only One Month Freeze Dried Food Supply (Sports)
Several critical parameters are met by this product: 1. longevity (it can be stored at room temperature for up to 20 years); and 2. Ease of use (simply add water). The cost per meal, although reasonable, is expensive compared to food prepared at home for long term storage. All-in-all worth the investment to prepare for short term emergency.

2.0 out of 5 stars taste great but less filling, February 22, 2012
This review is from: Emergency Survival Food Wise 60 Serving Entree Only One Month Freeze Dried Food Supply (Sports)
The food taste great but it works out to about an eight day supply for one person- only if that person is a one hundred pound little girl. Fortunately, there are some well known wholesalers that provide an actual 30 day supply for one person (2100 kcal/day)at the same price. If you are a serious prepper- don't bother with 'not so Wisefood'

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product!, March 16, 2012

For what it is, food stored for emergencies, it is great. I first received a free sample. (You can request one on Wise Foods' website.) So, I at least knew how one entree tasted. The alfredo pasta reminded me of Lipton noodle mixes. What it isn't, is the best tasting food or food I'll crave. What it is, is good tasting food that you can keep for an emergency for 25 years! The packaging seems very high quality; and the buckets are real easy to store and/or transport. Anyway best case scenerio, I'll end up with a year or two of food storage and my wife and I will be eating it in our retirement!!

Frequently Asked Questions
How long will the food last?
Most products have a 3-5 year shelf life under proper conditions. Products containing shrimp, tuna, brown rice, nuts, and dairy products have a shelf life of one to two years.

What are proper storage conditions?
The best is a cool, dry environment for our products. The cooler the better. High heat that occurs in a garage or the trunk of a car is not good for these products.

How does AlpineAire Foods extend the shelf life of food?
By using freeze-dried and dehydrated ingredients, most of the water is removed from the item. Each product contains an oxygen absorber, which is iron oxide pellets. Iron oxide attacks the head-space oxygen remaining in the pouch once the pouch has been sealed. Oxygen has moisture so the absorber collects the oxygen and thus slows down the oxidation process that can occur. Oxidation leads to rancidity.

Is the oxygen absorber harmful?
No, it is not harmful, but do not use it as a spice packet. It tastes awful.

What is freeze drying?
Freeze drying is a process used for instant or quick rehydration of certain dried foods. The first step in freeze drying is to rapidly freeze the food. The water content, now frozen, is turned directly into a gas and withdrawn from the food during the next steps, vacuum and low-heat, thus avoiding the shrinkage. Many of AlpineAire's products are custom freeze dried to suit strict quality requirements. Freeze-dried products include grains, beans, fruits, meats, seafood, pastas, vegetables, and eggs. Using this process, 98% of the moisture is removed.

Key advantages of freeze-dried products include:

  • The original taste and nutritional value of the food is retained due to very low heat temperature that is used.
  • Foods are quick and easy to prepare.
  • There's no waste.
  • It's an ideal method for maintaining flavors of meat, poultry, and fish.
  • Extends the shelf life of the product.
  • No preservatives are necessary.
  • Results in a super-lightweight, compact product.
  • A wide variety of foods are available.
  • Use hot or cold water to rehydrate.

What is dehydration?
The standard method of dehydrating vegetables and spices is to place the items on a conveyor belt and run them through an oven at a high temperature for a relatively short time. About 90 to 95% of the moisture is removed.

Some vegetables are more suited to this form of drying than others. This means that with the addition of water, the product rehydrates back to its original state more easily. Preferable items include: onions, bell peppers, tomatoes, celery, carrots and mushrooms. Dehydrated items such as peas, corn, and green beans do not rehydrate as well as freeze-dried.

What are proper storage techniques?
It is crucial that you store food properly:

  • Avoid exposure to heat and moisture; make sure foods are not accessible to insects or animals.
  • Never store food directly on the ground or on concrete floors--moisture can build up inside containers.
  • Avoid such storage places that experience temperature build-up such as attics, garages, or car trunks. Ideally, storage should not exceed room temperature for extended periods.
  • Store in a location that's accessible so that periodic inspections are easy and you can rotate supplies.
  • Avoid excessive and rough handling of pouch and canned foods.

  • 2 - Servings
  • No-Cook Entrée.
  • Prepare right in the pouch.
  • Meat Free entrée
  • Gluten Free

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect change of pace in my Oregon fire lookout tower, June 21, 2009
By
I am staffing a fire lookout in the Oregon wilderness this fire season. It is my first time as a fire lookout (I'm a retired airline pilot). Although I do all the cooking back home on the East coast (in a dynamite gourmet kitchen), the scratch cooking and cleanup were wearing me down in the cramped confines of the lookout (15 X 15, no grid power, haul water for cooking and cleaning up 60 steps, etc).
Then I discovered Mountain House Pro-Pak single-serving freeze dried entrees. I also buy the 2-serving packages, and have the leftovers for breakfast or lunch (the USFS provides me with a propane stove and refrigerator). Last night I fixed a Mountain House Rice & Chicken entree and steamed some fresh broccoli as a side disk. It was wonderful. Cleanup was much easier than when I cook a full meal (even a one-dish meal).
Tonight I am having a Mountain House Beef Teriyaki with Rice entree and a spinach salad. I'll fix meals from scratch again from time to time .. maybe. But I love... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars I Love Pro Paks!, May 7, 2011
So, I was the scoutmaster of a troop of 80+ boys and am an avid outdoorsman. Got a bunch of them scouts to do backpacking. Now I'm leading small groups of beginner through advanced backpackers out on trips. I remember freeze-dried meals from the 70's. Ugh! I've tried a number of different brands including Mtn House, Backpacker's Pantry, Harmony House, Mary Jane, and Natural High. Some good, some not quite so good. I've not had a bad Mountain House yet, and the Pro Paks are the best. Lots of food tightly vacuum-wrapped in rugged pouches you can eat out of. I've done a bit along the AT and most thru-hikers bring rice and homemade mixes because they can pack it light - and because it is cheap. The Pro Paks aren't really cheap, though you can find good buys out there (much closer to $5/pack in bulk) if you look.

I'm unsure what the problem was with the one low rating that's posted. I have consistently gotten good meals out of these and I've tried most of the varieties (all but... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Too much pepper, October 31, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Mountain House Pro-Pak Freeze-Dried Food Pouches (Misc.)
I wish I would have known the amount of peppers that were going to be in this. I know it should have some peppers, but it was overwhelming with every bite. I gave it 3 stars because overall it is a quality meal. Lightweight, compact, easy to make, and filling; the taste was just way off for me. I saw where some people were complaining the rice was a little hard but I did not experience this. I did leave it in the bag a minute or two longer due to reading that from other reviewers so that may have made the difference.

Overall, like I said, it is a quality meal while you're on the trail but unless you really love peppers then I wouldn't recommend it on taste.
